Twisted Diamond Lamp is an innovative lighting fixture that exemplifies the fusion of Middle Eastern architectural traditions with contemporary design principles. Created by Lebanese designer Tarek Elkassouf, this sophisticated luminaire represents a modern interpretation of the traditional moucharabiah lamp found in Middle Eastern souks. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, features a distinctive geometric form derived from a mathematically precise transformation of a cube, incorporating elements of distortion, bending, and twisting while maintaining the potential to return to its original cubic form. Crafted from perforated steel through laser cutting techniques and finished with charcoal paint for a velvety texture, each lamp is meticulously hand-welded and assembled by Lebanese artisans. The lamp's versatile modular design allows for multiple units to be stacked, rotated, and flipped, creating various configurations and patterns that pay homage to Middle Eastern geometric motifs. Standing at 160mm in all dimensions, this lighting fixture emerged from the designer's exploration of Beirut's dynamic urban character, characterized by its perpetual state of flux between stability and chaos, tradition and innovation. The design successfully overcame significant production challenges in Lebanon's complex manufacturing environment, including infrastructure limitations and regional instability, to create a piece that embodies both cultural heritage and contemporary functionality. The perforated surface creates intricate light patterns, while its adaptable nature enables users to customize arrangements according to their spatial and aesthetic preferences, making it particularly suitable for both residential and commercial applications where atmospheric lighting is desired.
