Tura Table
Tura Table is an award-winning furniture design that synthesizes ancient Egyptian architectural heritage with contemporary material innovation, conceived by designer Mai Wahdan and completed in August 2024 in Cairo, Egypt. The design draws its conceptual foundation from the pyramids of ancient Egypt, specifically referencing Tura stone, a high-quality limestone historically quarried from the Tura quarries near Cairo and utilized in the construction of pyramid casings due to its fine grain, durability, and luminous white appearance. This historical connection informs both the nomenclature and the aesthetic philosophy of Tura Table, establishing a dialogue between millennia-old construction principles and modern design sensibilities. The table features a tripartite base structure comprising three monumental stone-like forms that evoke the geometric solidity and permanence associated with ancient Egyptian architecture, while the transparent tempered glass top introduces a contrasting element of optical lightness and contemporary minimalism. The base components are fabricated from fiberglass through precision molding techniques, a material selection that addresses the inherent challenge of replicating the visual and tactile qualities of natural stone while significantly reducing weight to enhance usability and facilitate installation. The fiberglass construction employs advanced surface treatment methods to authentically reproduce the rugged texture, visual density, and chromatic variations characteristic of natural limestone, demonstrating sophisticated material exploration and production efficiency. The glass surface, measuring 850 millimeters by 850 millimeters with an overall height of 450 millimeters, is secured to the base using industrial-grade silicone bonding, a technique that creates a seamless visual transition while ensuring structural integrity and durability. This bonding method represents a departure from traditional mechanical fastening systems, eliminating visible hardware and preserving the design's clean aesthetic while providing sufficient adhesive strength to withstand typical use conditions. The design process, which commenced in May 2024, involved extensive research into material properties, including investigations into limestone durability characteristics and glass technology advancements, informing decisions that balance aesthetic appeal with functional requirements such as stability, maintenance ease, and safety considerations including smooth edge finishing. Tura Table embodies principles of biophilic design by incorporating natural material references that strengthen psychological connections between users and the natural environment, while simultaneously demonstrating how contemporary manufacturing technologies can reinterpret traditional materials for modern living contexts. The three-base configuration provides robust stability through distributed weight bearing, while the elevated glass plane creates visual permeability that prevents the piece from dominating spatial perception, making it suitable for various interior environments from residential to commercial applications. The design addresses ergonomic considerations through its 450-millimeter height, which aligns with standard coffee table dimensions optimized for comfortable reach from seated positions, facilitating its function as a surface for beverages, reading materials, decorative objects, and social interaction. As a statement piece, Tura Table demonstrates design versatility by functioning equally as a practical furniture element and as a sculptural object that commands visual attention, inviting contemplation of its formal qualities and historical references. The manufacturing process, currently underway in Cairo, reflects a commitment to local production capabilities and contextual appropriateness, connecting the design to its geographical and cultural origins. Tura Table received the Golden A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, a recognition that acknowledges its exceptional innovation, visionary approach, and significant contribution to furniture design discourse. The Golden A' Design Award designation specifically recognizes designs that demonstrate extraordinary excellence, incorporate brilliant artistic skill, employ unique innovations, and exhibit very strong technical attributes, positioning Tura Table among first-rate designs that advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology. The award evaluation considered multiple criteria including innovative use of materials, aesthetic appeal, functionality and usability, durability and longevity, originality and creativity, production efficiency, craftsmanship excellence, and design versatility, affirming that Tura Table successfully addresses these multifaceted requirements. The design represents an internal project developed for Luxentti, a multidisciplinary design studio specializing in urban, architecture, and interior design, whose diverse international team combines technical expertise with creative vision to deliver thoughtful, high-quality designs that balance functionality, aesthetics, and craftsmanship. Through its fusion of historical inspiration, material innovation, and contemporary form language, Tura Table exemplifies how furniture design can transcend purely utilitarian purposes to become a medium for cultural storytelling, material experimentation, and spatial enhancement, contributing to ongoing conversations about heritage reinterpretation, sustainable material alternatives, and the role of furniture as both functional object and artistic expression within contemporary interior environments.
