Tsuruichi Japanese Restaurant is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the seamless fusion of traditional Japanese architectural elements with contemporary design sensibilities. Located in Beijing, China, this 300-square-meter establishment, completed in 2014, showcases a distinctive interpretation of Japanese aesthetics through its pioneering use of strip-type partition boards, a characteristic element in Japanese architecture. The design, which earned a Golden A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, draws profound inspiration from Ukiyo-e art, particularly Utagawa Hiroshige's portrayal of rain in his renowned Hundred Beautiful Sceneries in Edo Era collection. The restaurant's interior features close-grained stripes that create a sophisticated visual rhythm, paying homage to the unique rain-depicting technique found in Japanese art history. This architectural approach not only satisfies traditional Japanese aesthetic preferences but also creates a modern spatial experience through the careful selection and implementation of materials including plastic laminate, oak, aluminum, glass, stainless steel, timber flooring, and tiles. The design team, led by Lee Hsuheng along with Zhao Shuang and Zheng Yanan, successfully translated the ephemeral quality of sudden rain and weather changes into permanent architectural elements, creating an immersive dining environment that resonates with both cultural authenticity and contemporary sophistication.
