Tratteggio is a painting technique used in art conservation and restoration, particularly for the treatment of losses or gaps in wall paintings, frescoes, and other forms of mural art. The term tratteggio is derived from the Italian word meaning hatching or shading. This method involves the application of fine, vertical brushstrokes in a hatching pattern to fill in missing areas of a painting. The brushstrokes are carefully applied in a color that closely matches the surrounding original paint, but with a slightly different tone or hue to distinguish the restored area from the original work. This technique aims to create a visual integration of the restored section with the original painting while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of the artwork. Tratteggio is based on the principle of chromatic abstraction, which emphasizes the use of pure colors and the optical mixing of the brushstrokes to achieve a cohesive visual effect when viewed from a distance. This approach to restoration is rooted in the theories and practices developed by the Italian art historian and conservator Cesare Brandi in the mid-20th century.
