Tranquil Zen Residence

Tranquil Zen Residence

Tranquil Zen Residence is an award-winning residential interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of Japanese Zen philosophy with contemporary living spaces, completed in 2018 in Hsinchu County, Taiwan. The design, conceived by Derson Chiu, masterfully integrates natural materials and minimalist aesthetics to create a serene living environment that promotes mental well-being and spiritual reflection. The residence features a thoughtfully planned layout comprising a living room, dining area, two bedrooms, and a dedicated meditation space for Buddhist worship, all unified by a cohesive design language that emphasizes simplicity and tranquility. The interior's material palette includes finished concrete, genuine cedar, and warm timber elements, creating a sophisticated interplay of textures and natural tones. Notable architectural features include an innovative honeycomb curtain system for natural light control, Diatomaceous earth textured walls for humidity regulation, and carefully crafted cedar ceiling panels that release subtle aromatic properties. The design's connection to nature is enhanced by its strategic location opposite a green park, with the interior spaces designed to frame and incorporate these exterior views. The project, which won a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional attention to spatial flow, material selection, and functional considerations while maintaining the core principles of Zen aesthetics. The residence successfully achieves a balance between practical living requirements and spiritual contemplation, featuring thoughtful elements such as an elevated timber floor in the meditation room and a sophisticated open-plan kitchen that facilitates social gathering while preserving the overall sense of serenity.
