Tino Sehgal

Tino Sehgal is a British-German artist whose work centers on the creation of situations that engage the viewer in a direct and often intimate encounter with the artwork. Sehgal's works are characterized by their ephemeral nature, with no physical objects or documentation left behind after the performance is over. Instead, Sehgal's works rely on the viewer's memory and experience of the encounter, challenging traditional notions of art as a static object to be viewed from a distance. Sehgal's works often involve performers engaging with viewers through conversation, movement, and other forms of interaction. These encounters are carefully choreographed, with performers trained to respond to the viewer's reactions and create a unique experience for each individual. Sehgal's works also often involve the use of sound and music, with performers singing, chanting, or playing instruments to create a sensory-rich environment. One of Sehgal's most well-known works is This Progress, which was first presented at the Guggenheim Museum in 2010. The work consisted of a series of encounters between performers and viewers, exploring the idea of progress and its relationship to history, economics, and politics. Another notable work is These Associations, which was presented at the Tate Modern in 2012 and involved a group of performers engaging in a series of conversations with viewers about the nature of art and its role in society. Overall, Sehgal's work challenges traditional notions of art and the relationship between the viewer and the artwork. Through his use of performance and interaction, Sehgal creates a unique and often transformative experience for the viewer, blurring the boundaries between art and life.
