Time Capsule Package is an innovative library storage solution and communication design concept that reimagines the traditional time capsule format within a contemporary library setting. This sophisticated packaging design, created by Japanese designer Koichi Namimoto, serves as both a functional storage unit and an aesthetic element within the library space, allowing users to preserve personal treasures and mementos for future retrieval. The design, measuring 258mm in width, 85mm in depth, and 315mm in height, features a thoughtfully curated five-color range that creates visual movement while maintaining the intellectual atmosphere characteristic of library environments. The package's development involved extensive research into user behavior and storage preferences, resulting in a design that harmoniously balances practical functionality with aesthetic appeal. Manufactured through a strategic combination of machine and hand-crafted processes, the packages incorporate carefully selected materials resistant to warping and color fading, ensuring longevity and durability for long-term display. The design addresses unique challenges within Japanese library contexts, particularly concerning earthquake safety and high-shelf accessibility, while simultaneously serving as an innovative solution for unutilized upper shelf spaces. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning creation represents a significant advancement in library experience design, offering users an annual loan system for storing personal artifacts while contributing to the overall spatial design of the library environment. The project, implemented between June 2022 and June 2023 in Nishi-Tokyo City, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of both practical storage requirements and the evolving role of libraries as community spaces.
