Tiger Club
Tiger Club is an award-winning interior space design project that exemplifies the sophisticated integration of Eastern and Western architectural philosophies within a contemporary commercial entertainment venue, specifically conceived to embody the cultural duality characteristic of Qingdao, a Chinese coastal city renowned for its harmonious blend of European colonial architecture and traditional Oriental design principles. Designed by Guoliang Du and completed between August 2023 and April 2024, Tiger Club represents a comprehensive exploration of spatial narrative through the deliberate juxtaposition of Italian Romantic architectural elements with Chinese aesthetic sensibilities, manifesting in a multi-layered experiential environment where light serves as both a transitional medium and a defining compositional element. The design methodology employed in Tiger Club demonstrates a rigorous approach to material selection and spatial organization, utilizing an extensive palette that includes concrete, steel, glass, light brick, gypsum board, stone rock plate, luxury stone cave stone jade, wood veneer, and hard package materials, all orchestrated to create a progression from exterior formality to interior intimacy. The architectural vocabulary of Tiger Club incorporates distinctive European motifs such as round arches, spiral staircases, shaped roofs, and dynamic ceiling treatments, which required overcoming significant technical challenges in both modeling complexity and construction precision to ensure faithful realization of the design intent. The spatial composition follows a carefully choreographed sequence that begins with an Italian-style romantic entrance, transitions through zones of varying luminosity, and culminates in areas of refined Chinese aesthetic expression, creating what the designer describes as an exploration path from the outside to the inside, where each encounter with detail generates resonance between form and beauty. The project's dimensional specifications reflect a meticulous attention to scale and proportion, with elements such as 800 x 2600 millimeter rock slabs, solid wood composite parquet flooring, and custom furniture pieces including sofas constructed with imported Russian pine frames, high-density rebound sponge filling, and imported leather upholstery measuring L2450 x W1000 x H800 millimeters with a sitting height of 450 millimeters, alongside side tables crafted from natural marble and 304 stainless steel with anti-fingerprint surface treatment measuring L400 x W400 x H480 millimeters. The construction methodology adhered to conventional interior design sequencing, commencing with structural modifications including partition demolition and construction, followed by electrical installation and concealed wiring, then progressing to wall, ceiling, and floor treatments, and culminating in surface finishing operations encompassing ceiling painting, door and window painting, baseboard installation, and the placement of lighting fixtures, millwork, and stone elements. Tiger Club's design philosophy draws inspiration from the philosophical assertion that architectural art transforms external spiritless matter into creative spiritual expression, a concept the designer attributes to Hegelian aesthetics, thereby positioning the project as an embodiment of both the romantic essence of Italian townscape architecture and the poetic resonance of Oriental courtyard design, synthesized within the bustling contemporary context to achieve a casual yet sophisticated freedom that becomes the space's inner spiritual character. The project's innovative approach lies in its successful concentration and humanization of urban cultural characteristics through design intervention, creating an environment where multiple stylistic vocabularies coexist without conflict, each contributing distinct qualities of form and color that sustain spatial vitality through every manifestation of illumination. The technical execution of Tiger Club required precise compositional focus and structural accuracy, integrating innovations from both Eastern and Western scientific and technological traditions to achieve a cohesive whole that respects the integrity of each cultural influence while creating something distinctly contemporary and original. The design serves a commercial client through Decent Design, a multidisciplinary design firm that integrates interior, soft furnishing, architecture, landscape, and art services with a mission to create innovative, high-quality comprehensive design solutions across hospitality, office, commercial, and residential sectors, maintaining full-service oversight from initial spatial design through construction implementation to soft furnishing design and procurement. Tiger Club received the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 within the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award category, a recognition that acknowledges designs demonstrating excellence and innovation through aesthetic sophistication combined with high functionality, reflecting the designer's profound understanding and skill while incorporating original innovations that elicit strong emotional responses and make notable impacts on the improvement of everyday life. The Silver A' Design Award designation represents an extraordinary achievement, recognizing tremendously brilliant and exceedingly creative works that illustrate outstanding expertise, talent, and acuity, with recipient designs expected to be wonderful, showpiece works that are remarkably professional and profoundly innovative, standing for their strong technical characteristics, splendid artistic skill, original innovations, discerning emotional elements, and insightful creativity. The recognition through this prestigious international design competition, organized annually since 2008 across over one hundred award categories, provides Tiger Club with enhanced visibility within the global design community, offering the project access to extensive promotional benefits including publication in the award winner's yearbook, participation in international design exhibitions, press release distribution, and inclusion in various design rankings and networks that collectively amplify the project's reach to design-oriented audiences, consumers, and journalists worldwide. The project exemplifies contemporary interior design practice's capacity to synthesize diverse cultural references into coherent spatial experiences that serve both functional commercial requirements and aspirational aesthetic objectives, demonstrating how thoughtful material selection, precise technical execution, and conceptual clarity can transform programmatic requirements into environments that transcend mere utility to achieve cultural significance and emotional resonance.
