Tide-Interactive Seaplane Terminal Interactive Seaplane Terminal

Tide-Interactive Seaplane Terminal Interactive Seaplane Terminal is an innovative architectural concept that reimagines maritime infrastructure through dynamic interaction with tidal patterns, specifically designed for Sea Island, Richmond, Canada. This groundbreaking design, created by Yongwook Seong and Josh Harvey, represents a forward-thinking solution to rising sea levels, incorporating adaptive architectural elements that respond to environmental changes. The terminal complex encompasses three distinct zones: a 1020m² restaurant and event space, a 765m² terminal area, and a 1500m² hotel facility, with a variable height ranging from 8 to 12 meters depending on tidal conditions. The structure's most distinctive feature is its responsive design, utilizing ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) walls with an innovative counterweight system that contracts and expands in harmony with daily tidal variations, creating a continuously evolving spatial experience. The building's floating floor system, anchored by fixed-point piers, responds to the Fraser River's 3-4 meter daily tidal fluctuations, while the roof incorporates a rainwater collection system that creates aesthetic waterfalls along its edges, effectively integrating local precipitation patterns into the architectural experience. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project, recognized in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in addressing climate change challenges through architectural solutions, particularly focusing on the interaction between water and built environment. The design's emphasis on passenger comfort is achieved through the strategic implementation of water elements, which help alleviate the typical stress associated with terminal environments, while its adaptive structure serves as a prototype for future coastal architectural developments in regions threatened by rising sea levels.
