THR350 Architecture - Residential

THR350 Architecture - Residential is a remarkable nine-storey private residence situated on a hillside of Hong Kong Island, exemplifying innovative architectural design that harmoniously blends with its historical and geographical context. The architectural concept draws inspiration from Hong Kong's historical perception as a 'barren rock' in the 1850s and a distinctive waterfall formation, manifesting these elements through meticulous design features. The facade exhibits regimented uniformity through 1.5-metre modules and uniform lines, representing the barren rock aspect, while a sculptural staircase, conceived as three stacking ice cubes, symbolizes the waterfall element. This sophisticated residential structure, completed in 2012, encompasses a gross area of 1,832 square meters and showcases exceptional technical achievements, particularly in its innovative staircase design featuring double curved laminated low-iron glass panels with XIR and printed PVB interlayers. The exterior is distinguished by bronze anodized aluminium cladding, specially manufactured to achieve precise color consistency and quality, complemented by low iron low-e double glazing with high-performance interlayer and integral sun-shading screens. The project overcame significant technical challenges, including achieving an unprecedented internal radius of 250mm in the staircase construction. The design demonstrates remarkable versatility, incorporating provisions for potential future conversion into typical apartment units, while maintaining its artistic integrity. This architectural masterpiece, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a significant achievement in residential architecture, combining aesthetic excellence with technical innovation and contextual sensitivity.
