Thomas Wilfred

Thomas Wilfred (1889-1968) was an American abstract artist who pioneered a new style of art called lumia. He developed the term to describe his work which blended light, color, and motion, creating a luminous art form. Wilfred's work combined painting, sculpture, music, poetry, and even film to present a mixture of sensations. His works often featured a hybrid of mixtures, creating a single abstract composition. Wilfred's most famous work is Clavilux (1920-1938), a multimedia performance in which he used light, color, sound, and motion to create a synaesthetic experience. He also created Clavilux Aureolensis (1925-1934), a series of light sculptures which featured intricate patterns and vivid colors. Wilfred was a leader in developing light painting as an art form and is recognized as one of the most influential abstract artists of the 20th century.
