Thomas Sutherland
Thomas Sutherland was a Scottish-American academic who was held captive in Lebanon for more than six years. He was born in Scotland and later moved to the United States, where he became a professor of agriculture at the American University of Beirut. In 1985, he was kidnapped by a group of militants and held captive until his release in 1991. During his captivity, he was subjected to physical and psychological torture, but he remained resilient and never lost hope of being freed. After his release, Sutherland became an advocate for hostages and worked to raise awareness about their plight. He also wrote a book about his experience called At Your Own Risk: An American Chronicle of Crisis and Captivity in the Middle East. In addition to his advocacy work, Sutherland continued to teach and lecture on agriculture and international development until his retirement.
