He was born in 1540 and died in 1617, and during his lifetime, he held several important positions in the English government, including Lord Keeper of the Great Seal and Lord Chancellor. Egerton was known for his legal expertise and his dedication to public service, and he played a key role in shaping English law and politics during a time of great change and upheaval. Egerton was born into a wealthy family and received a comprehensive education at Oxford University. He began his legal career as a barrister in the mid-1560s and quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and knowledgeable lawyer. In 1579, he was appointed as Queen Elizabeth I's Solicitor General, and he served in this role for several years before being promoted to Attorney General in 1592. In 1596, he was appointed as Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, and he held this position until 1603, when he was elevated to the position of Lord Chancellor. As Lord Chancellor, Egerton played a key role in the administration of justice in England. He presided over the Court of Chancery, which was responsible for hearing cases related to equity and trusts, and he worked tirelessly to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the court system. He was also involved in a number of important political issues, including the trial of Sir Walter Raleigh and the impeachment of the Earl of Essex. Despite his many accomplishments, Egerton was not without his critics. He was accused of corruption and abuse of power on several occasions, and his reputation suffered as a result.
