TheDesk Coworking Space
theDesk Coworking Space is an innovative architectural renovation project that exemplifies the delicate balance between historical preservation and contemporary workplace design. Located in a 1960s residential building in Saiwan, Hong Kong, this adaptive reuse project transforms a former shop and art school into a sophisticated coworking environment while maintaining the structure's original character. The design philosophy draws inspiration from Carlo Scarpa's principle of creating tension between new and old elements, resulting in a thoughtful conservation experiment that reveals and celebrates the building's layered history. The space encompasses approximately 750 square feet across the ground and mezzanine floors, expanding dramatically to 4,000 square feet on the first floor, creating an intentional spatial narrative through scale variation. The design incorporates three distinctive elements: a repurposed lightwell transformed into a small garden with natural illumination, a converted backyard that serves as a communal courtyard, and a restored balcony that promotes energy efficiency and indoor-outdoor connectivity. The material palette juxtaposes exposed original elements such as brick walls, concrete beams, and metal staircase structures with contemporary finishes including white paint, cement sand flooring, and expanded metal panels. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category demonstrates innovative environmental strategies through its incorporation of passive design measures, including natural ventilation and sun shading, while the strategic placement of green spaces - categorized as focal, extended, and indented - creates a sustainable workplace environment that minimizes carbon footprint through careful material conservation and adaptive reuse principles.
