The Spring Of Chang'an Chinese New Year Gift Box

The Spring of Chang'an Chinese New Year Gift Box is an innovative cultural gift packaging design that masterfully integrates traditional Tang Dynasty aesthetics with contemporary presentation methods, created by designers Chen Yao, Chen Xinjie, and Li Wangguan. This sophisticated design piece draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Xi'an (formerly known as Chang'an), the ancient capital of the Tang Dynasty, incorporating four significant elements - flower, bird, butterfly, and fish - derived from Tang cultural relics to symbolize the vitality of spring and the renewal associated with the Chinese New Year festival. The gift box, measuring 145x145x325mm, employs authentic materials that echo Tang Dynasty craftsmanship, including paper, mahogany, and cloth, while its color palette faithfully references the painting traditions of the period. The design successfully bridges a millennium-old gap by presenting ancient New Year customs in a format accessible to contemporary audiences, supported by extensive research into Tang Dynasty folk customs and verification by cultural experts. This culturally significant work, which garnered recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in combining historical authenticity with modern design sensibilities. The project, completed between August 2018 and January 2019, achieved considerable commercial success with over 6,000 units sold before the Spring Festival, highlighting its effectiveness in preserving and promoting traditional Chinese cultural elements through thoughtful design innovation.
