The Shuttle Coffee Table Coffee Table
The Shuttle Coffee Table Coffee Table is an innovative and distinctive piece of furniture design that masterfully merges science fiction aesthetics with functional art, created by Hungarian designer András Lacfi. This remarkable piece, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, draws its inspiration from a 1991 Star Trek pinball machine, specifically reimagining the Enterprise's landing shuttle form into a contemporary furniture piece. The table's sophisticated construction employs multi-layered MDF to achieve its complex geometric form, featuring a meticulously crafted glossy finish that required extensive development to perfect. Standing at 540mm in height, with dimensions of 1470mm in length and 715mm in width, this 50-kilogram masterpiece incorporates several extraordinary elements that elevate it beyond conventional furniture design. The table showcases authentic meteorites, including Muoninalusta, Chelyabinsk, Moldavite, and Indochynite specimens, alongside three illuminated Dilithium crystal replicas, all housed within specially designed compartments. The piece features advanced LED lighting technology controlled through a custom-made panel, offering six distinct lighting programs and under-table illumination. This unique fusion of furniture design and interactive art installation demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship through its 390-hour production process, combining practical functionality with elements of pop culture and astronomical artifacts. The design represents a significant achievement in contemporary furniture design, particularly in the context of upcycling and luxury art furniture, exemplifying how cultural references can be transformed into sophisticated functional art pieces.
