The Shades Of Clouds Vacation Villa

The Shades of Clouds Vacation Villa is an innovative architectural renovation project located in Songyang Mountain, Zhejiang, China, that masterfully integrates natural landscapes with contemporary design sensibilities. Completed in 2019 after a two-year development period, this 1,500-square-meter vacation property distinguishes itself through its unique approach to preserving traditional architecture while incorporating modern comfort elements. The design, conceived by Wei-Ting Lin, deliberately departs from conventional Chinese architectural elements, instead drawing inspiration from the ethereal movement of clouds that frequently encompass the mountainous setting. The renovation carefully preserves 80% of the original structure's features, including the distinctive yellow soil walls, which were reinforced with specialized adhesives and waterproofing treatments to ensure durability in the region's humid climate. The interior design embraces Balinese influences, featuring a predominantly white color palette that symbolically represents clouds, complemented by imported Balinese furniture and natural textile elements in cotton and linen. Large windows were installed throughout the structure, replacing 80% of the original openings to maximize views of the surrounding landscape. The project overcame significant challenges, including local preservation requirements and limited workforce availability, ultimately achieving a harmonious balance between architectural heritage and modern functionality. The design incorporates rock-constructed walls and wooden platforms that follow the natural topography, minimizing environmental impact while creating an immersive experience that earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category for its innovative approach to spatial design and cultural integration.
