The Saints Wear White Chapel
The Saints Wear White Chapel is an innovative interior design concept that reimagines a church space in China's Hubei province as a powerful tribute to medical workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Created by artist and designer Duyi Han in February 2020, this conceptual work transforms traditional ecclesiastical architecture into a contemporary memorial space through large-scale murals depicting healthcare workers in protective equipment. The design spans 120 square meters and draws inspiration from historical church painting and fresco traditions, adapting these classical techniques to honor modern-day heroes. Initially conceived as a series of photorealistic digital renderings, the project garnered significant international attention for its timely commentary on healthcare workers' sacrifices and resilience. The interior experience features an immersive layout reminiscent of traditional chapel architecture, with a central installation replacing the conventional altar position, allowing visitors to move freely within the contemplative space. The design employs a sophisticated combination of stucco and plaster, intended for eventual realization as painted frescos, either within an existing chapel or as a standalone installation. This innovative fusion of religious architectural elements with contemporary subject matter earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition, receiving a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. The project's significance lies in its ability to bridge cultural and temporal boundaries, using Western religious architectural forms to celebrate secular healthcare professionals in a Chinese context, while creating a universally resonant emotional experience that promotes global unity and understanding.
