The River is Everywhere Placid Place is an award-winning interior design project that transforms a 200-square-metre apartment in Taipei City into a contemplative living space inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel Siddhartha and the geographical features of its riverside location. Completed in May 2021, this minimalist residential design masterfully integrates the metaphysical concept of river flow with physical space, creating a harmonious environment that reflects both natural elements and spiritual journey. The design's most distinctive feature is its sophisticated use of hand-crafted plaster and specialist trades to create refined textures throughout the living areas, with a particularly noteworthy ceiling treatment featuring sleek curved lines that echo the fluidity of water. The living room incorporates rhythmic bores on partition walls that create elegant layering effects, casting shadows reminiscent of trees reflected on a river's surface. A bespoke dining counter, crafted from marble and plastic sheet with a curved mirror leg, serves as a sculptural centerpiece that interacts with natural light and shadow movements. The private spaces are characterized by warm wooden elements that create a natural boundary between metaphorical rivers and caves, effectively balancing openness with intimacy. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project successfully challenges local design conventions by achieving a minimalist aesthetic while respecting Taiwanese cultural context, demonstrating exceptional skill in materials selection, spatial planning, and conceptual execution.
