The Reach Architecture Expansion is a groundbreaking architectural project that represents a significant advancement in performing arts facility design, serving as a living memorial through its innovative integration of form and function. This expansive architectural endeavor encompasses three interconnected pavilions nestled beneath green roofs, creating a harmonious blend of interior and exterior spaces dedicated to arts education, rehearsal, and performance. The design, which earned a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, features 72,000 square feet of interior space complemented by 130,000 square feet of gardens, reflecting pools, and a pedestrian bridge connecting to the riverfront. The pavilions, constructed with titanium white board-formed concrete, showcase a pioneering architectural approach through their gently curving forms designed to capture natural light. A notable innovation in the project is the development of crinkle concrete, a specialized texture integrated into the rehearsal and performance space walls that combines structural integrity with superior acoustical properties. The exterior concrete finish, created using 4-inch tongue and groove Douglas fir boards with CNC plywood forms, presents a monolithic appearance from afar while revealing intricate, human-scale details upon closer inspection. The project, completed in 2019, represents a forward-thinking approach to arts institution design, featuring the largest green roof in Washington, D.C., and establishing new standards for sustainable architecture while creating flexible spaces for enhanced community engagement and artistic expression.
