The Racket Submarine Flagship Store
The Racket Submarine Flagship Store is an innovative architectural and interior design project completed in 2017 in Himeji City, Japan, that revolutionizes the traditional sports retail experience through its distinctive submarine-inspired design. The flagship store, spanning 412 square meters with dimensions of 13,050mm x 31,330mm x 7,440mm, features a remarkable elliptical metallic structure that serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. This architectural masterpiece, designed by Tetsuya Matsumoto and recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, transforms the conventional sports retail environment into a dual-purpose space that functions as both a high-efficiency retail outlet and a museum of racket sports. The design's most distinctive feature is its innovative display system, which arranges rackets perpendicular to customers beneath the elliptical structure, maximizing visibility and accessibility while accommodating customers of varying heights. The upper section of the elliptical structure serves as a unique museum space, showcasing valuable vintage rackets, including historically significant pieces and those preserved from the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, creating a modern interpretation of Noah's Ark for racket preservation. The construction employs a sophisticated combination of metallic frames, exterior metallic panels, and interior wood panels, with the upper ellipse connected by steel pipes featuring specialized hooks for racket display. The design's efficiency-focused research led to an optimal display pattern that revolutionizes traditional racket merchandising methods, moving away from conventional hook-based systems to create a more streamlined, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing shopping environment. This award-winning design exemplifies the seamless integration of retail functionality with cultural preservation, while its innovative approach to space utilization and product display has established new standards in sports retail design.
