The Playhouse Residential House
The Playhouse Residential House is an award-winning architectural transformation project that exemplifies innovative adaptive reuse in Hong Kong's urban landscape. This remarkable 6000-square-feet, two-level apartment, situated within a typical industrial building, represents a sophisticated blend of functionality and aesthetic excellence through its dual-purpose design. Conceived and executed by designer Louie Shum, the space has been masterfully reimagined as both a private entertainment venue and a vacation residence, featuring distinct atmospheric qualities across its two levels. The lower level serves as an entertainment space, incorporating a professional kitchen and casual private member's club ambiance, while the upper level provides a refined dining experience with overnight accommodation capabilities. The design's material palette draws from global sources, featuring aged Italian brick tiles, blackened steel I-beams, and specialized concrete panels from LCDA, creating an authentic New York-style industrial loft aesthetic. A notable feature is the lower level's social dining area, which showcases an impressive reclaimed wood ceiling complemented by tin ceiling panels positioned above a custom-made communal dining table. The upper level continues the modern vintage theme through an eclectic combination of brass and concrete paneled ceiling treatments. Completed in March 2016 after a nine-month construction period, this project earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its exceptional design merit and innovative spatial solutions. The project's success is particularly noteworthy for its meticulous material sourcing and testing processes, which were accomplished under strict time constraints while maintaining high standards of quality and aesthetic coherence.
