The Peacock Wine Cellar
The Peacock Wine Cellar is an exceptional architectural masterpiece that harmoniously blends ancient Chinese craftsmanship with contemporary design innovation, created through a meticulous three-year fabrication process completed in 2021. This sophisticated wine storage facility, spanning 10 square meters, features one thousand individually handcrafted blue-glazed terra cotta tiles arranged in a triple curved parametric array inspired by the majestic form of a peacock. The design's distinctive feature lies in its recreation of a rare Song Dynasty (960-1127) feather-textured blue porcelain glazing technique, which had been lost to history until this project's realization. Each tile serves dual functionality as both a wine bottle holder and a light source, incorporating internal LED illumination that creates an ethereal ambiance throughout the space. The fabrication process, undertaken in collaboration with master artisans from Jingdezhen, China's historic porcelain capital, demonstrated exceptional technical complexity, with only one in ten tiles surviving the extreme heat required to achieve the specific blue glazing. The cellar's sophisticated climate control system is managed through a smart controller with mobile application access, while a custom aluminum ladder attached to a floating steel ring facilitates easy access to elevated storage positions.
