The Normal Cafe Shop

The Normal Cafe Shop is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies contemporary coffee shop design through its thoughtful integration of form and function, awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. Created by designer Yun Chien Tsai, this establishment transforms a challenging narrow, elongated space into a fluid, experiential environment through the strategic use of flowing curves and continuous surfaces. The design's centerpiece is a masterfully crafted curved counter that merges seamlessly with structural columns, creating a theatrical stage for baristas to showcase their coffee-making expertise. The space employs a sophisticated material palette combining blue mosaic tiles, gray tones, and warm wood textures, while a blue stone counter surface serves as a striking focal point. The ceiling's wooden elements, enhanced by strategic lighting placement, creates an inviting atmosphere while visually expanding the space. The design's innovative approach to space optimization is evident in its carefully planned under-counter storage solutions, which accommodate essential equipment such as refrigerators, filtration systems, and storage while maintaining a clean, uncluttered presentation. The integration of the Modbar Espresso System transforms the coffee-making process into a performative experience, visible from both inside and outside the establishment. This design successfully addresses spatial constraints through the use of mirrors to minimize visual barriers and creates a continuous visual flow from entrance to rear, demonstrating excellence in both aesthetic and functional design solutions. The project, completed in 2020 in Taipei, Taiwan, represents a significant achievement in commercial interior design, where the coffee-making process becomes an integral part of the customer experience, elevating the simple act of serving coffee into an engaging theatrical performance.
