The Next 40 Years Office
The Next 40 Years Office is a thoughtfully renovated 207-square-meter architectural space located in Taiwan's Taichung city, representing a remarkable transformation of a 40-plus-year-old building from the former US military dormitory zone into a contemporary studio space. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning project, designed by Szu Hsin Cheng and team, exemplifies sustainable architectural renovation through its careful preservation of existing site vegetation and innovative material recycling approaches. The design philosophy centers on harmoniously integrating the building with its urban context while maintaining ecological integrity, achieved through the strategic use of natural stone materials, preserved trees, and indigenous flora. The renovation process involved removing old enclosing walls and replacing them with multi-layered grille systems, enabling dynamic interaction between the architectural elements and the natural landscape. Notable features include recycled granite materials for outdoor pavement, repurposed tiles for stair platforms, and the incorporation of Taiwan incense cedar as interior decor elements, all contributing to the project's environmental consciousness. The design team's innovative approach to spatial organization is evident in the second-floor conference room, where the original building frame was preserved and integrated with a book wall cabinet system. A distinctive outdoor terrace, accessed via a carefully designed staircase, offers a fresh perspective on the neighborhood while respecting the community's original skyline. The project's success lies in its ability to balance preservation with innovation, creating a space that not only serves its new function as a professional office but also enriches the urban fabric through its thoughtful integration of natural elements and sustainable design principles.
