The Lesser Polish Eaves Cottage Residential Architecture
The Lesser Polish Eaves Cottage Residential Architecture is an innovative residential design that masterfully reinterprets traditional Polish wooden arcade architecture for contemporary living. This remarkable architectural achievement, designed by Boguslaw Barnas and completed in 2020 in Zabierzów, Poland, demonstrates an exceptional synthesis of historical vernacular elements with modern architectural principles. The design ingeniously addresses the challenges of a narrow, irregular plot by incorporating five distinct levels within a legally compliant two-story structure. The ground floor features a modernist approach with extensive south-facing glazing, complemented by naturally aging wood finishes that pay homage to historical eaves houses. The distinctive attic, finished with precise architectural detailing using contemporary Ruukki Classic roofing sheet, creates a compelling contrast with the lower level. The interior spatial organization is particularly noteworthy, featuring a gradually sloping living area that opens to spectacular views, while a central multi-step drop creates an innovative auditorium-like space that extends through the glass pane to the exterior. The design draws significant inspiration from the wooden arcade houses of Lanckorona's market square, particularly their characteristic protruding eaves. Technical innovations include concealed gutters and drainpipes integrated within the roof and outer walls, and a steel structure that replaces traditional load-bearing pillars to create an uninterrupted living space. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project, recognized in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, exemplifies how contemporary residential architecture can respectfully incorporate regional architectural traditions while meeting modern living requirements. The design's success lies in its ability to create a harmonious integration with the landscape while providing a sophisticated living space for a family of four, demonstrating exceptional creativity within regulatory constraints.
