The Imperial Palace Lighting

The Imperial Palace Lighting is an innovative lighting design collection that reimagines traditional Chinese architectural elements through contemporary design language, created by designers Lei Yu and Bingzhe Li. This sophisticated lighting series, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, encompasses floor lamps, table lamps, and wall lamps that capture the essence of imperial Chinese architecture through minimalist wire-frame construction. The design employs 2mm steel wire for the outer lampshade structure and 1.5mm steel wire for internal decorative elements, with the latter featuring gold plating that creates an elegant contrast against the antique copper finish of the main components. The collection's distinctive aesthetic is achieved through a careful study of traditional palace architecture, translating complex architectural forms into clean, linear elements through innovative wire-bending techniques and thoughtful array patterns. Standing at 1500mm high for the floor lamp version, with variations including a 600mm table lamp and a wall-mounted option measuring 160mm x 210mm x 290mm, each piece features a modular design that allows for flat-pack shipping while maintaining simple assembly requirements. The lighting system incorporates dual lighting modes controlled by a strategically placed switch 910mm from the ground, demonstrating a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. This design, completed in Shanghai between May and November 2018, represents a significant achievement in contemporary Chinese design, successfully bridging traditional cultural elements with modern manufacturing techniques and practical considerations, while maintaining cost-effectiveness through the intelligent use of universal parts across the product range.
