The Hidden Path Posters
The Hidden Path Posters is a significant artistic and cultural interpretation project that reimagines Tibetan Buddhist art through contemporary graphic design, specifically focusing on the sacred Kalachakra mandala through the lens of the five elements. Created by designer Lan Zhang, this innovative series of posters, measuring 298mm x 738mm, represents a thoughtful bridge between Eastern spiritual symbolism and modern visual communication. The project addresses several critical challenges in the contemporary understanding of mandalas, including the circulation of incorrect information in commercial markets, the esoteric nature of mandala knowledge, and the predominance of Western interpretations. Through careful extraction and convergence of interrelated symbols, the posters serve as a secular and accessible medium for understanding complex Tibetan Buddhist concepts. The design methodology encompasses four key stages: Identification, Contextualisation, Translation, and Explication, resulting in a sophisticated visual language that maintains the recognizability of traditional Tibetan symbols while creating unique and sacred representations. The posters, primarily designed for silk printing but adaptable to various materials, can be utilized in multiple contexts, from yoga centers to meditation spaces, and can be scaled for different applications such as postcards and bookmarks. This work, which earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, represents a significant contribution to cross-cultural understanding and the contemporary interpretation of traditional spiritual art forms. The project's development, spanning from 2013 to 2015, demonstrates a thorough research process incorporating academic sources, museum collections, and experimental design approaches to create a new methodology for understanding mandalas within existing cultural frameworks.
