The Heart Sutra Poster is an innovative artistic interpretation of Buddhist scripture that seamlessly merges traditional Chinese calligraphy with contemporary design techniques, created by designer Zhang Xuwei. This remarkable work represents a unique fusion of materiality and spirituality, utilizing an unconventional approach where tea and paper are blended to create the raw material from which Chinese characters are manually sculpted. The poster, measuring an impressive 8000×700mm, demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship through its hand-pinched characters, incorporating 15 grams of tea and five sheets of paper in its creation. The integration of tea as a material holds particular significance, as it symbolizes Zen philosophy, while paper serves as the traditional medium for cultural transmission. This thoughtful combination creates a profound dialogue between Buddhist spirituality and material culture. The design process involves dissolving paper in tea solution to create a malleable medium, from which each character is individually shaped by hand, requiring exceptional precision and patience. The work, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category in 2018, exemplifies the intersection of religious text, artistic expression, and material innovation. Originally designed for Huili Temple, a historic religious site dating back to the East Jin Dynasty, the poster serves both as a cultural artifact and a contemporary interpretation of sacred text.
