The Grand Blue Express Restaurant is an innovative aquarium dining establishment located in Ueno, Tokyo, that masterfully combines luxury train aesthetics with underwater dining experiences within a compact 95-square-meter space. Designed by Tetsuya Matsumoto, Motoaki Takeuchi, and Risa Iriyama, this Silver A' Design Award-winning interior design project demonstrates exceptional spatial optimization through its creative interpretation of a luxury train coach concept. The restaurant's layout ingeniously transforms spatial constraints into an immersive dining experience, featuring a central corridor that serves individual dining cabins on both sides. Each cabin is equipped with custom-designed aquariums that replace traditional train windows, creating the illusion of dining aboard an underwater cruise. The sophisticated interior employs a thoughtful material palette, including drywall construction, ceramic tile flooring, and specialized stainless steel ceiling panels that simulate water waves in the central corridor. The aquarium frames feature a distinctive golden baked paint finish and are engineered with accessible maintenance panels. The design accommodates four two-seater cabins on one side and four four-seater cabins on the opposite side, culminating in a VIP cabin, while maintaining efficient kitchen access points. This architectural achievement, completed in February 2022, exemplifies how innovative interior design can transcend spatial limitations to create a unique dining atmosphere that merges luxury transportation aesthetics with aquatic elements.
