The Exchange Bar is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the fusion of historical Shanghai aesthetics with contemporary luxury hospitality design, located in the historic Blackstone Apartment building within Shanghai's former French Concession. This sophisticated establishment, completed in 2020, spans 150 square meters and masterfully captures the essence of 1930s Shanghai through its eclectic design language that harmoniously blends Western influences with Chinese traditional elements. The centerpiece of the space is a striking golden turntable that serves as both a visual focal point and a clever reference to bank vaults, paying homage to the establishment's name and concept. The design incorporates an array of carefully curated materials including Malay paint, bespoke wallpaper, handmade tiles, ancient mirrors, and custom metal curtains, creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously opulent and mysterious. Notable design features include two private boxes inspired by bank vaults and account rooms, vintage Chinese abacuses, and dining tables adorned with coins, all contributing to a cohesive narrative that celebrates Shanghai's rich financial history. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully overcame the challenges of working within a historically protected building while meeting modern commercial requirements. Under the creative direction of Chasing Wang and Neal Zhu, the design team developed an interior space that masterfully balances historical preservation with contemporary functionality, creating an exclusive atmosphere that appeals to sophisticated clientele while maintaining cultural authenticity.
