The Classic Of Tea Books Design

The Classic of Tea Books Design is a groundbreaking publication design project that reimagines the world's earliest recorded tea manuscript through contemporary materials and production techniques. Created by Chinese designer Junheng Li, this innovative work seamlessly integrates traditional Chinese cultural elements with modern design sensibilities, manifesting as a uniquely crafted book made entirely from beech wood with red copper title engravings. The design draws profound inspiration from ancient Chinese philosophical principles, particularly the Taoist concept of harmony between humanity and nature, as expressed in Laozi's Tao Te Ching. The physical dimensions of this remarkable work measure 230mm x 230mm x 60mm for the packaging, with individual pages measuring 210mm x 210mm x 1.2mm. The design's distinctive interactive element allows readers to open the book from the middle, with wooden pages that can be individually removed and examined, creating an engaging tactile experience. The production process, completed between 2017 and 2018 in Beijing, involved extensive experimentation with laser engraving techniques, requiring over 30 iterations to achieve the optimal balance between laser power, speed, and material density. This meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach to book design earned the work a Bronze A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category, recognizing its contribution to contemporary design while honoring traditional Chinese cultural heritage. The project exemplifies the harmonious integration of three fundamental materials - bamboo, wood, and bronze - which were historically significant in both Chinese culture and tea traditions prior to the Common Era.
