The Century Restaurant is a distinguished contemporary Chinese dining establishment that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional culinary culture with modern design sensibilities. Located in Sydney, Australia, this sophisticated restaurant space, completed in 2013, represents a masterful reimagining of Chinese dining customs through innovative interior architecture and thoughtful brand integration. The design, created by Alex Wong and Kylie Chow, showcases several remarkable features including a dramatic entrance adorned with fifteen individual aquarium tanks constructed from double-glazed, toughened glass, creating a seamless visual connection between the reception and main dining area. The restaurant's interior design incorporates numerous cultural elements reimagined through a contemporary lens, including the striking 'Great Wall of Chopsticks' - an artistic installation comprising 82,320 chopsticks arranged into handmade wall tiles, paying homage to this timeless dining implement. The space features distinct dining areas, including the naturally illuminated Sun Room with full-height glazing, and four semi-private dining spaces crafted from genuine American Oak, evoking the sophisticated ambiance of wine barrel aging. A particularly notable design element includes an innovative lighting installation in the semi-private rooms, where teacups suspended by fiber optics create an artistic tribute to Chinese tea culture. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2018, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its comprehensive design approach, encompassing everything from interior architecture to brand identity elements such as menu design, signage, and staff uniforms.
