The Board Skateboard

The Board Skateboard

The Board Skateboard is an innovative transportation device that revolutionizes the traditional skateboard design through its remarkable transformable structure, featuring 57 interlocking pivot hinges that enable it to convert from a classic cruiser shape into a perfect circle. This groundbreaking design, created by Chia-Wei Chen, addresses the common challenges of skateboard portability and storage while introducing a compelling visual element through its transformation process. The skateboard's unique engineering allows it to maintain full functionality in its extended form while offering unprecedented convenience when collapsed into its circular configuration, measuring 305mm in width and 335mm in length. Crafted from a precise combination of aluminum, iron, and plastic components, the design demonstrates exceptional attention to manufacturing precision and material selection to ensure both durability and smooth transformation mechanics. The innovative approach to skateboard design earned recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in the Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design category, acknowledging its contribution to advancing personal mobility solutions. The design's significance extends beyond its practical applications, as it challenges conventional product stereotypes and introduces a new paradigm in transformable sports equipment. When folded, the skateboard can serve as an aesthetic decorative piece, introducing a dual-purpose functionality that bridges the gap between sporting equipment and interior design elements. The project, developed between 2018 and 2019, represents a significant advancement in skateboard design, particularly in addressing urban storage constraints and transportation challenges while maintaining the essential performance characteristics of a traditional skateboard.
