The Big Roof Fire Station
The Big Roof Fire Station is an innovative architectural project completed in 2021 in Keelung, Taiwan, that masterfully integrates contemporary fire station functionality with indigenous mountain house design principles. Located in a mountainous region characterized by frequent rainfall and steep 45-degree terrain, this four-story structure spans 2,045 square meters and represents a significant advancement in public service architecture. The design philosophy emphasizes harmonious integration with the natural landscape, featuring a distinctive sloping roof that functions as an extension of the mountain's natural contours. The building's sophisticated architectural elements include strategically placed balconies and openings that create intermediate spaces between the landscape and structure, facilitating natural ventilation while providing protection from intense sunlight. Constructed using self-compacting concrete and raw concrete formboard, the building demonstrates exceptional durability and maintenance efficiency, particularly considering the region's humid climate and seismic activity. The structure's design prioritizes both operational efficiency and quality of life for firefighters, incorporating living spaces that enhance work-life balance. The project, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, successfully challenges traditional approaches to institutional architecture by avoiding imposing, majestic forms in favor of a more contextual, community-integrated design. The building serves as both a functional emergency service facility and a thoughtfully integrated community landmark, featuring a scenic pathway that connects residents to local parks and natural landscapes, effectively demonstrating how public service buildings can simultaneously fulfill their primary function while enriching the urban fabric.
