The Altar Restaurant is an avant-garde dining establishment completed in 2017 in Taipei City, Taiwan, distinguished by its dramatic interpretation of medieval aesthetics through contemporary design language. This 26-square-meter space, designed by Chung-Lin Lee and CHIEN-CHEN KUO, masterfully blends historical reverence with modern sophistication, creating an immersive dining environment that challenges conventional restaurant design paradigms. The interior architecture employs a striking interplay of black and white shadows, complemented by delicate three-dimensional sketch-like elements that define spatial textures. The design's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from the temporal nature of existence, expressed through carefully curated elements such as welding marks, smoke effects, and painted surfaces that simulate the patina of age. The space features a sophisticated greyscale palette punctuated by subtle golden accents, creating an atmosphere that oscillates between luxury and decay, modernity and antiquity.
