The Alchemist Office

The Alchemist Office is an innovative interior design project that revolutionizes the conventional office space concept through its unique integration of sustainable materials and artistic vision. Created by designer Enoch Hui, this transformative workspace represents a harmonious blend of functionality and artistic expression, featuring an organic ribbon structure composed of thousands of recycled timber planks interconnected with recovered metalwork. The design draws inspiration from an allegorical tale of alchemy and transformation, manifesting as a dynamic installation where wooden elements appear to grow organically from the floor, creating an immersive environment that challenges traditional office design paradigms. The space is characterized by its sophisticated engineering, employing a complex system of metal chains and custom-designed locking mechanisms that allow for future disassembly and reuse, exemplifying sustainable design principles. Each wooden component, measuring 100mm x 100mm x 2000mm, is precisely positioned to create interstitial spaces that facilitate natural movement and visual connectivity throughout the office. The project, completed in 2016, earned recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its exceptional innovation in sustainable office design. The design's unique spatial arrangement creates an ever-changing visual experience as occupants move through the space, with carefully calculated intersections between wooden elements forming strategic viewpoints that connect different areas of the office, while the integration of recycled materials pays homage to the client's background in metal trading and e-waste recycling.
