Terry Fox

Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete and humanitarian who captured the hearts of millions with his courageous Marathon of Hope. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1958, Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 18 and had his right leg amputated. Despite this setback, he trained tirelessly and embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Fox began his journey in St. John's, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980, and ran an average of 42 kilometers per day. He inspired Canadians and people around the world with his determination and selflessness, and his Marathon of Hope raised millions of dollars for cancer research. Unfortunately, Fox's cancer returned and he passed away on June 28, 1981, at the age of 22. His legacy lives on through the Terry Fox Foundation, which has raised over $750 million for cancer research since its inception in 1981. Terry Fox's impact on Canadian culture and society cannot be overstated. He embodied the Canadian values of perseverance, humility, and compassion, and his Marathon of Hope is an enduring symbol of hope and determination. Fox's story has been immortalized in countless books, films, and documentaries, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of Canadians to make a difference in the world.

His works often merged traditional aspects of painting and sculpture, such as the use of color, line, and texture, with newer media such as media-specific installation art. His works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands. Some of his notable works include the Peepshow series (1972-1976), the Doll Sculptures (1975-1980), and The Fox Pyramid (1997-1999).
