Terrace To The Sky Residence
Terrace to The Sky Residence is an innovative architectural renovation project that transforms a forty-year-old dwelling in Taipei's old city district into a contemporary living space that harmoniously bridges past and present. This sophisticated duplex renovation, spanning 180 square meters across the fourth and fifth floors, exemplifies thoughtful adaptive reuse in urban residential architecture. The design, created by architect Chinhua Huang, masterfully integrates historical elements with modern living requirements, featuring five bedrooms, four living rooms, and two bathrooms. The project's distinctive approach to preservation and renovation is evident in its creative material transitions, where original elements such as exposed red bricks were reimagined through the use of long glass bricks, maintaining dimensional continuity while introducing natural light penetration. The design's most notable feature is its innovative rooftop terrace, which establishes a unique relationship with the sky through a series of continuous arched openings and folding floor-to-ceiling windows that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The interior spaces are characterized by versatile, movable partitions and thoughtful material selections, including smooth cement surfaces that create rustic textures reminiscent of Chinese ink paintings. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases exceptional spatial planning through its multi-level design, incorporating elements such as raised floors for bedrooms and a semi-immersed bathtub that adds a resort-like atmosphere. The terrace area, transformed into an urban jungle through careful plantings, demonstrates innovative space utilization in dense urban environments, while the overall design successfully addresses the challenges of limited natural light exposure common in 1960s Taiwanese architecture.
