Terrace Chalet Apartment

Terrace Chalet Apartment is an innovative residential interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of indoor and outdoor living spaces through thoughtful architectural intervention. Located on the third floor of a historic Tong Lau building in Hong Kong's Central district, this approximately 1,000-square-foot dwelling represents a significant departure from traditional cellular layouts, embracing instead an open, flexible concept that prioritizes connection with its tranquil street environment. The design's centerpiece is a sophisticated wooden theatre box positioned at the terrace, creating a multifunctional space for activities ranging from bird watching and exercising to working and gardening. This architectural element, inspired by Adolf Loose's 1930 Muller House, features a raised platform that doubles as guest seating, while maintaining privacy through careful sight line management. The apartment's material palette draws inspiration from Swiss chalets, predominantly utilizing timber to create a unified aesthetic that extends from the flooring to the theatre box's walls and ceiling. The design incorporates innovative storage solutions, including a concealed walk-in storage area with full-height mirrors at the entrance, and an open kitchen with a bar that enhances the space's fluid character. Environmental consciousness is evident in the integration of planters along the window sill, creating a dialogue with the external vegetation, while a muted green color scheme reinforces the connection to nature. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project demonstrates excellence in interior space design through its thoughtful consideration of spatial relationships, functionality, and aesthetic refinement, successfully transforming a traditional apartment into a contemporary living space that responds to modern lifestyle needs while preserving cultural sensitivity.
