Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillators
Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillators (TCXOs) are electronic devices that are designed to provide highly accurate and stable frequency signals. They are widely used in applications that require precise timing, such as in telecommunications, military, aerospace, and navigation systems. TCXOs are an improvement over traditional crystal oscillators, which are highly sensitive to temperature variations and can cause frequency drifts. The basic principle of operation of a TCXO is to use a temperature sensor to measure the temperature of the crystal oscillator and adjust its frequency accordingly. This is achieved by using a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) in conjunction with a temperature sensor and a control circuit. The VCXO generates a frequency signal that is proportional to the input voltage. The temperature sensor measures the temperature of the crystal oscillator and sends a signal to the control circuit, which adjusts the input voltage to the VCXO to compensate for any temperature variations. TCXOs are available in various types, including analog and digital TCXOs. Analog TCXOs use an analog control circuit to adjust the frequency of the oscillator, while digital TCXOs use a digital control circuit. Digital TCXOs are more accurate and stable than analog TCXOs, but they are also more expensive.
