Teddy

The word ‘Teddy’ is a diminutive of the English given name Theodore and dates back to around 1900 in the English language. The term first gained prominence in the United States when President Theodore Roosevelt, affectionately known as ‘Teddy’, was pictured during a hunting trip and refused to shoot a bear that had been tethered to a tree. The phrase ‘Teddy’s bear’ then became widely used and subsequently the term ‘teddy’ for a children’s toy bear began to appear. The word has since gone on to see widespread use across all English speaking countries and its etymology, morphology, and pragmatics have evolved over the course of the past century. The original diminutive form of Theodore underwent morphophonological simplification to produce the modern version of Teddy. Here, the initial consonant cluster at the start of the word Theodore was reduced and aspirated to produce the pronunciation of Teddy.
