Tea Yard Teahouse
Tea Yard Teahouse is an innovative architectural and interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese courtyard architecture with contemporary spatial design principles, located in the ancient city of Manjinglan. This 860-square-meter establishment, designed by Jus Tian and Gavin Tan, masterfully integrates the cultural elements of Bai nationality with modern functionality, featuring a distinctive arrangement of space boxes that wrap around a central vegetation yard. The design draws inspiration from the traditional enclosure patterns of Dali and the outline of Erhai Lake, creating a sophisticated interplay between enclosed and open spaces across three floors. The interior aesthetic is characterized by a refined material palette incorporating local rough stone, tough iron, and blue wood products, complemented by pure cotton and linen textiles, establishing a balanced dialogue between warm and cool elements. The integration of tropical rainforest vegetation from Xishuangbanna adds a distinctive garden aesthetic while paying homage to the local ecosystem. The innovative spatial arrangement eschews conventional surrounded or island layouts in favor of a more organic distribution of space boxes throughout the garden, enabling visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural landscape. This thoughtful design approach, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully addresses the original challenges of opacity and closure in the pre-existing structure, transforming it into a contemporary tea house that preserves cultural heritage while embracing modern design sensibilities.
