TAYA Ginza Shop is a meticulously renovated historical haberdasher establishment located in the prestigious commercial district of Ginza, Japan, representing a harmonious blend of traditional retail heritage and contemporary design innovation. This architectural masterpiece, designed by Manabu Chiba, Satoko Kimura, and Genki Mori, spans across three floors with a total area of 208.15 square meters, embodying a sophisticated approach to commercial space renovation. The design's most distinctive feature is its innovative facade treatment, utilizing stainless steel with varying degrees of polish to create an engaging visual dialogue with the street environment. This thoughtful exterior treatment progressively becomes more mirror-like at higher elevations, effectively reflecting Ginza's glamorous urban landscape while maintaining an intimate connection with pedestrians through strategically placed reflective surfaces at eye level. The interior space is characterized by custom-designed wooden furniture that serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, creating a sense of depth within the compact space through multiple layered zones. The design successfully preserves the store's century-old heritage while introducing contemporary elements to attract a younger clientele, exemplifying excellence in retail space design as recognized by its Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. The project, completed in 2010, demonstrates exceptional material innovation through its experimental use of stainless steel finishes and sophisticated space planning that maximizes the visual depth of the relatively modest floor area across its basement, ground, and second floors.
