TASTING THROUGH 24 Book Design
TASTING THROUGH 24 Book Design is an innovative cultural book design project that explores and documents Chinese traditional food culture through a sophisticated combination of photography, narrative content, and graphic design elements. Created by Italian-based designer JIAYI LU, this comprehensive publication serves as a bridge between traditional Chinese culinary heritage and contemporary design sensibilities. The book distinguishes itself through its multifaceted approach to storytelling, incorporating personal experiences and memories related to Chinese cuisine, complemented by carefully curated visual elements including original photography, graphic illustrations, and thoughtfully crafted typography. The design includes auxiliary elements such as spice-crafted bookmarks, custom posters, handmade stamps, and photo albums, creating an immersive cultural experience. The physical manifestation of the work demonstrates considerable attention to sustainability and social responsibility, utilizing recycled paperboard packaging inspired by traditional Chinese food containers, with production involving community engagement through employment of individuals seeking work opportunities. The project, which earned the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, represents a three-month intensive development process that successfully overcomes the challenges of comprehensive content creation, including extensive photography, textual content development, and multilingual translations. The book's design philosophy emphasizes authenticity in representing Chinese food culture, moving beyond common restaurant-based perceptions to deliver a more nuanced and genuine cultural narrative. Initially produced in a limited edition of ten copies in Florence, Italy, the project has garnered significant interest for its potential to serve as an educational and cultural bridge, with prospects for expanded content and broader distribution to reach audiences interested in authentic Chinese culinary traditions.
