Tarkeeb Gate House And Garden Security Booth

Tarkeeb Gate House And Garden Security Booth

Tarkeeb Gate House and Garden Security Booth is an innovative architectural project that reimagines the conventional security booth typology through thoughtful design integration of functionality, environmental consciousness, and social consideration. Designed by William Sarnecky and Michael Hughes, this sophisticated structure serves as a replacement for an aging guard booth at a restricted parking area entrance, elevating the standard security post into a multifunctional space that addresses both practical and humanitarian needs. The design's most distinctive feature is its exterior parasol, inspired by traditional mashrabiya architectural screens, which performs multiple functions: it mitigates solar gain for the air-conditioned interior booth while creating dual shaded exterior living spaces. The structure, measuring 10175mm x 2853mm x 4000mm, incorporates advanced parametric computational studies and combines CNC plasma cutting technology with traditional steel craftsmanship, showcasing a harmonious blend of mass production and localized customization. The design particularly excels in its attention to human comfort and social equality, providing essential amenities such as air conditioning, shaded rest areas, a drinking fountain, and a small garden for security personnel and campus workers who endure challenging environmental conditions. The project, which was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in addressing pragmatic functions while promoting community welfare and environmental consciousness. The visual permeability of the bar grate mashrabiya effectively balances the security guard's dual role of surveillance and visibility, while the etymology of the Arabic word mashrabiya is thoughtfully incorporated into the design concept, linking the traditional screen element with its historical reference to a communal drinking space.
