Tangible Lamp
Tangible Lamp is an innovative lighting fixture that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of minimalist design principles and interactive technology, created by Italian industrial designer Luca Porta. This sophisticated illumination device distinguishes itself through its essential form and intuitive touch-based brightness control system, which allows users to modulate the LED light intensity through a tactile membrane interface. The design, inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini's poem Vicina agli occhi and the architectural works of Alvaro Siza, particularly the Portuguese Pavilion, manifests in a structure measuring 250 x 250 x 345 millimeters. The lamp's construction showcases a thoughtful material composition, featuring a robust mahogany wood base crafted using CNC machining technology, complemented by a thermoformed 4mm Corian curved surface that houses an integrated touch sensor. The contrast between the substantial base and the delicate curved surface creates an elegant aesthetic balance while maintaining functional integrity. The lamp's innovative interaction design allows users to control illumination through intuitive upward finger movements along the sensor, creating a unique correlation between physical gesture and light intensity. This design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, represents a significant advancement in interactive lighting design, combining aesthetic refinement with practical functionality. The implementation of Arduino-based programming for sensor management demonstrates the seamless integration of technology within the design, while maintaining visual cleanliness and operational simplicity.
