Tangchao Wharf Restaurant is an innovative culinary establishment that masterfully integrates traditional Teochew cultural elements with contemporary design aesthetics, situated in Shenzhen, China. Completed in November 2016 and spanning 450 square meters, this architectural masterpiece was conceived by chief designer Ray Cai, who drew inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of the Lingnan region. The restaurant's design philosophy carefully balances historical authenticity with modern functionality, incorporating traditional spatial concepts such as Xiashanhu and Sidianjin to create distinct zones including an antechamber, courtyard, and back hall. The establishment's distinctive facade features a symbolic five-elements gable, representing metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, while a prominent bull sculpture pays homage to the historic Xiang-zi Bridge. The interior space showcases sophisticated design elements including custom-made chandeliers, vintage steel pipe tungsten lamps, and modern Chinese-style seating arrangements, all thoughtfully integrated to create an atmosphere of refined cultural appreciation. The design earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2018, acknowledging its innovative approach to spatial design and cultural preservation. Notable features include immortal grass sealed in glass bottles, arranged to evoke the moss-covered walls of traditional Teochew residences, and impressive Chinese calligraphy installations that enhance the literary atmosphere while maintaining a delicate balance between heritage and contemporary design sensibilities.
