Tandy Graphics

Tandy Graphics is a term that refers to a graphics and sound standard developed by Tandy Corporation for its line of IBM PC compatible computers. The Tandy Graphics Adapter (TGA) was introduced in 1984 and was designed to improve the graphics capabilities of the IBM PC and its clones. The TGA was capable of displaying 16 colors at a resolution of 320x200 pixels, which was a significant improvement over the standard CGA graphics adapter that could only display 4 colors at the same resolution. In addition to the improved graphics capabilities, the Tandy Graphics standard also included a sound system called the Tandy 3-voice sound chip. This chip was capable of producing three independent voices and was used in many early PC games, such as King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. The Tandy 3-voice sound chip was also compatible with the PC speaker, which allowed games to be played on systems without a Tandy sound card. The Tandy Graphics standard was popular among game developers in the mid to late 1980s, as it provided a significant improvement in graphics and sound capabilities over the standard IBM PC hardware. However, as other graphics and sound standards were introduced, such as VGA and Sound Blaster, the Tandy Graphics standard became less popular and eventually faded into obscurity.
