Taki Residence

Taki Residence

Taki Residence is an architecturally significant holiday villa located in Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan, exemplifying a harmonious integration of modern design with natural surroundings. Designed by architect Hikohito Konishi and completed in 2017, this remarkable structure spans 233 square meters on a 1,244-square-meter lot, featuring an innovative approach to slope integration and environmental adaptation. The residence's distinctive design incorporates a partially subterranean entrance and garage, with living spaces elevated 7 meters above, accessible via an underground stairway that creates a dramatic spatial transition. The structure employs reinforced concrete construction, chosen specifically to withstand the region's extreme weather conditions, including heavy snow loads exceeding 250 centimeters and temperature variations from -20 to 30 degrees Celsius. The building's thermal efficiency is achieved through a sophisticated 100mm-thick EPS insulation system embedded within the concrete walls and slabs, complemented by Low-E paired glass windows with argon gas insulation. Named Taki (waterfall) due to its integrated water feature drawing from a nearby creek, the residence demonstrates exceptional environmental consideration and aesthetic sophistication. The design, which earned a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2018, masterfully frames the surrounding landscape through large concrete apertures, transforming natural vistas into living artwork while maintaining optimal interior comfort throughout extreme seasonal changes.
